An idea I've had for some time is to try to document as much of Dundee's wildlife as possible, something I feel I've managed to do relatively well with the birds likely to be seen around the city. Butterflies too have been relatively easy to document, as have the rather more limited numbers of species of mammals and amphibians. I bought a book on pan-species listing fairly recently, but I don't really have the time to even attempt to document EVERYTHING (and plants/fungi/trees/lichens/mosses etc don't really interest me at all). Instead, I've decided to compromise a bit by trying to photograph and identify (hopefully correctly!) as many of the insects, spiders etc as I can find. (If you can help with any missing IDs marked with *, or incorrect ones, please leave a comment).
Even just the insects on their own is a huge project and I am very much a novice when it comes to most insect groups - though I can often narrow them down to broad families. Thankfully there are various apps that offer suggestions, (though not always correct), as well as a number of Facebook groups dedicated to various families of insects where it is possible to post photos for ID. My intention with this new insect blog is to have a place for my insect photos and IDs which will allow me to compile a list of what I've seen. Posts will be rather more sporadic compared to my Dundee Birding blog, but time will tell how successfully I can achieve my goal.
These photos were all taken at Dundee Law on the 8th of May 2026. Weather was mostly sunny and reasonably warm but with fairly strong winds at times.
